Recruiting Brisk. Recruiting has been quite brisk in Mastertoil during the past week and in consequence 80 recruits are awaiting examination by the Medical Board. The men are being examined this week and next week. Church Parade. All units of the local Territorials will parade at the Masterton Drill Hall at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday,.May 26, to take part in a National Day of Prayer service to be held in St. Mattheiv’s Church. It is particularly requested that all men attend the parade. Dress will be trousers and belt. Road Cycling. On Saturday the Wairarapa Amateur Cycling Club will hold a 17-mile event over a course from Dixon Street to the Taratahi Hotel and back, finishing outside the Scout Den in Dixon Street. The handicapper, Mr W. Palmer, has declared the following handicaps:—K. Woollett, G. Goodin, R. Copp, scr.; J. Brader, K. Gilbert, D. Birnie, 2min. 30 secs.; A. Morris, G. Simpson, J. McAliece, Smin. 30secs.; J. Heaven, I. Rutherford, smin. SOsecs. The race will commence promptly at 2.30 p.m. sharp. Motor Driver's Disabilities. It was revealed at an inquest in Napier that the driver of a truck which struck a pedestrian, who was killed, was blind in one eye, partially deaf, and suffering from chronic rheumatism. The inquest, held before the district coroner, Mr Miller, S.M.. was on the death of Jeremiah Foley, waterside worker, Napier, who was struck by a truck driven by a Maori waterside worker, Hoani Kururangi, also of Napier. The verdict was that Foley died from injuries received in the accident.

Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund. One of the most, energetically conducted and generously supported street days ever held in Wellington resulted in the collection yesterday of £2651 for the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund. The amount is probably the most ever raised by a street appeal in Wellington, and is exclusivelof the sums raised in the Hutt Valley. The Dominion total of the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund was reported yesterday to be more than £60,000. District contributions wore stated to be as follows:- ■ Auckland, £12,250; Wellington, £lO.414; Canterbury, £16,400; Dunedin. £5500: Gisborne. £500; Napier, £6200; Taranaki. £1000: Blenheim, £350; Palmerston North, £5000; Wanganui, £l.400.

The combined Masonic Lodges in Masterton will hold a dance in the Masonic Hall, Masterton. tomorrow night (Saturday, May 25), the music for which will be supplied by Udy's Or? chestra. All Freemasons arc welcome to attend without an invitation, but visitors must receive an invitation.
