“ADVANCE ALONG THE AISNE” CAPTURE OF LAON CLAIMED. REPULSE OF FRENCH ARMOURED ATTACK. (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) LONDON, May 20. Tonight’s German communique states that German troops stormed Laon and the Swastika was hoisted on the Town Hall. They also advanced south-west and reached the Oise-Aisne Canal. The official agency says: “The pursuit of the enemy is continuing. Our forces and dive-bombers repulsed a French armoured attack north of Laon and destroyed fifty tanks. Strong German forces have advanced along the Aisne.” GENERAL DUIGAN’S VIEW DECISION WILL BE REACHED ON WESTERN FRONT. CONFIDENCE IN ULTIMATE VICTORY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The situation on the battle front in Europe was commented on as follows by Chief of General Staff, MajorGeneral Duigan. in an interview today: “The final decision will be reached on the Western Front and with our Allies we have got to fight it out to a finish. Once again our backs are to the wall. Determination, courage and the will to win will bring us through the crisis and I feel that all these qualities are possessed by the Allied armies. I am certain victory will come in the end and that civilisation will be saved.”
