REGENT THEATRE

“THE CAT AND THE CANARY.” The brilliant picture, “The Cat and the Canary,” will be finally shown tonight at the Regent Theatre, with charming Paulette Goddard co-starred with Bob Hope. The chills and fun get under way—as they did in the great stage play on which the picture is based —when seven people come to a mansion in the Louisiana marshes to hear the will of the deceased owner. All but one of them are potential heirs. Involved in important supporting roles are John Beal, Douglass Montgomery, Gale Sondergaard, Elizabeth Patterson and George Zucco. Elliott Nugent directed. The supporting subjects are of excellent quality and include the latest Air Mail News and an excellent musical gem, “Farewell Vienna,” played by the famous Philharmonic Orchestra. The plans' are at Nimmo's and the theatre. “GOLDEN BOY.” Tomorrow’s programme will be headed by “Golden Boy,” starring Barbara Stanwyck, William Holden. Adolphe Menjou, Joseph Calleia and Edward Brophy. This is a sensational screen success from the studio which gave picture patrons “Lost Horizon,” “Mr Deeds Goes to Town,” and “You Can’t Take It With You.” It is a great motion picture to challenge all others, the story of a boy’s tragic conflict. It has drama of deep emotional conflict between music and tenderness. It has excitement of a boy too sensitive to be a prizefighter, too poor to be a musician. It has the glory of the great peace that only sweet romance can bring. His heart wasn't fighting, but his hate was; hate for the beast he was becoming; hate for the love that had betrayed him; hate for the riches that brought only heartbreak. Tenderly, the screen tells this heart-warm-ing story. The featurettes include an outstanding study of Holland's Zuycler Zee which has been so much in the news lately.
