FALSE PRETENCES

ENGLISH TRAVELLER BEFORE COURT. MAGISTRATE AN INTENDED VICTIM. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. When hearing a charge of false pretences against an English traveller in the Court this morning, the Magistrate, Mr Levvey, identified the accused as a man who had tried to make him one of his victims. The accused was William Marshall, aged 26, who was charged with obtaining £l7 10s by falsely representing two Belgian rugs were genuine Persian. When told that Marshall was canvassing yesterday afternoon, the Magistrate said: “That's the man. I was going to be one of his victims. He was very glib." Marshall was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within three years, a special condition being that he leaves the country within a month. “We do not want him here.” added the Magistrate. “The sooner he leaves the better.”
