Large Dividends. The dividend of over a century and a-quarter paid by Rollicker at Hawera is the largest return made by the totalisator in New Zealand for some time. In March, at Motukarara, Nightlass’s dividend was a century and three-quarters, and a year ago. Racecamp paid a century in the Farewell Handicap at Te Rapa, but dividends of such proportions occur rarely enough to be notable happenings on the turf. The honour of paying the largest dividend in New Zealand belongs to the trotter Wairoa Belle, who returned her lone supporter, who was not her trainer, D. F. Berkett, over £lOOO. However, when the double totalisator was in existence, the Star Rose —Captain Shannon combination for the New Zealand Cup and Stewards’ Handicap of 1906 yielded more than £2OOO to the lucky investor. By far the largest dividend in Australia was paid by D.O.D. in winning the Goodwood Handicap, South Australia, nearly 60 years ago. His dividend was more than £BOO. The largest dividend paid by a New Zealand galloper was that of Ephialtcs in 1930, when he won at Carterton and enriched his single supporter to the extent of over £5OO. This return overshadowed that in the Hobsonville Hurdles at Avondale in 1924 when Karcmu paid over £4OO. In the same year Borsalene paid three figures at Ashhurst and Keen rewarded a small coterie of supporters at the rate of nearly two centuries and a-half at the Hawke’s Bay autumn meeting. Another large Hastings dividend was paid by Greenore in November, 1934, the rate being a little more than that of Keen.
Versant paid over £2OO at Avondale several years ago and won again on the second day. In addition to that of Nightglass, the Banks Peninsula course, in October, 1933, saw Sibella pay two supporters at the rate of three centuries.
