Won on Speed. It is to be hoped that Disdain’s win over nine furlongs at Riccarton can be taken as evidence of improved stamina, but a doubt exists. There was no pace on in the early stages, and Knight Commander, who lost several lengths at the start, caught the rest of the field. The leadership was held by Wild Talk, who was running under a good hold. This was all in Disdain’s favour, as she could beat the opposition for speed. She really appears to have won on speed at the end of a slow-run race and not on stamina. Since returning to Riccarton Disdain has been working over more ground, and, as a result, settling down in her work, so that she may not run herself out as formerly. Palmerston North Races. The Railway Department announces the issue of specially reduced fares for the race meeting at Awapuni on May 16 and 18.
