RUGBY FOOTBALL

REFEREES TO PUT BALL IN SCRUM. The Wairarapa Rugby Union has decided that in future Rugby matches in Wairarapa the referee shall place the ball in the scrum. This decision followed on a deputation of the Referees’ Association waiting on the Union and asking for the support of the union in enforcing the practice. ptago and Southland unions have adopted the new system. The Wairarapa Referees Association has elected the following officers for the ensuing year:—President, Mr H. J. McKenzie, vice-presidents, Messrs -H. Reid, Tinsley and McKay; secretary. Mr H. Matson; executive, Messrs Reid, Matson and McKenzie. Five teams have entered in the Wairarapa Rugby Union’s fourth grade competition—Carterton, College, Martinborough, Masterton and Red Star. The competition will open on May 18. RED STAR CLUB MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Red Star Football Club’s management committee was held at the residence of Mr S. Henson, Macara Street, when there was a large attendance, including Messrs A. Corskie (president) and E. R. Rogers (vice-president). In welcoming Mr Rogers to the meeting ,the chairman (Mr Corskie) stated that Mr Rogers owing to his experience in the field of play and knowledge of football would be a decided acquisition to the club in its activities. As there were so many players coming forward he was pleased to announce that the club would field a fourth grade team, making four teams all told.

It was decided to make a donation to the Provincial Patriotic Fund.

Mr V. Pinkney accepted the position of coach for the fourth gra'de team. ■ The social committee will hold a meeting to make arrangements for its dance which will take place shortly.

Various matters of interest were discussed.

A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman for having presided and to Mr and Mrs Henson for their hospitality.
