FEATHERSTON

BOROUGH COUNCIL AN INCREASE IN RATES. (“Times-Age" Special.) Estimates and rates for the coming year were approved at last nights meeting of the Featherston Borough Council. The rates show an increase of 1 5-16 d„ which is largely accounted for by an increase of 1 3-Bd. resulting from the new water loan. The total rates which will be struck at the next meeting of the council are Is. 27-16 d. The mayor, Mr. J. W. Card, presided and there were also present Councillors M. B. Tait, W. Johnson, T. G. Hardie, C. R. Skipage, C. C. Kenward, R. F. Watson, B. D. Donald and J. S. Viles. The Wairarapa Automobile Association asked the council to frame a bylaw to stipulate the parking of cars three feet apart. It was decided to take no action at present, but to mark out a no-parking area in front of the picture theatre. A hawker's licence was granted to D. J. Gosson. The Prime Minister. Mr. P. Fraser, acknowledged the council's message of sympathy in the death of Mr. Savage. Mr. Ben Roberts, in acknowledging receipt of a letter from the council in regard to the unsatisfactory rail-car service, said he would look into the matter. The Valuation Department forwarded valuations for the year for alterations to the roll. The Featherston Badminton Club was granted the use of the Town Hall on the same terms as last year, and the Miniature Rifle Club was given the use of the gymnasium. The Fire Brigade wrote thanking the council for fixing a practice plug for the use of the brigade. The health officer, in his report for the past year, congratulated the council on the health of the borough. There had been only two cases of notifiable diseases during the year. HAUNUI CROQUET CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting of the Haunui Croquet Club, the president, Miss Eva Card, presided over a fair attendance. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —Patroness, Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford (re-elected); president, Miss Eva Card (re-elected); secretary, Miss/M. Nix (re-elected); treasurer, Mrs Hankers (re-elected); captain, Miss Esma Card (re-elected).

The fourteenth annual report was presented, and stated: —The opening day was held on October 11, in beautiful weather. The lawns were dclareS open by the Mayoress, Miss Card, and competitions were then held on the lawn, followed by afternoon tea. The Wairarapa tournament was this year held on the Haunui and Featherston lawns, and some good games were witnessed. Although our club was not successful in winning any events, several of -the members reached the finals. Mrs Barry and Miss Esma Card won the Association’s A Buttons from Featherston, and then held them until the end of the season. The A championship was won by Miss Esma Card, with Mrs Hankers runner-up; the Haunui Cup by Mrs W. Card, with Mrs White runnerup. Among the many enjoyable days was one when the playing members surprised the foundation members, Mesdames Wakely, Barry and Miss Eva Card, with a party. Shoulder sprays were presented to each of them, and half-hour games were played, followed by a dainty afternoon tea. The week following these members entertained the rest of the playing members, and a very happy day was spent. The closing day was held in beautiful weather, and our patroness (Mrs Riddiford) presented the trophies won during the season, and also the cup which she has presented to the club to take the place of the one won outright by Miss Esma Card. Many competitions were held and much enjoyed. Our thanks are due to our president, Miss Card, for her untiring efforts as greenkeeper. The club also thanks the bowlers for their help, all donors of trophies, the caretaker, Mrs Hayden, and all the members, with a special word of thanks to the Press and to the auditor, Mrs W. Nicie. Miss Norma Shepherd, who is a med-f ical student at Dunedin, arrived home today to spend the vacation with her parents, Mr and Mrs N. C. C. Shepherd, Hayward Street. Mrs F. J. Moore, of Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs J. B. McKenna, Wakefield Street. Misses Anne and Elspeth Frend, of Wellington, are visiting their father, Mr J. Frend, of Pihautea. Guild Meeting. The Kahutara and Pihautea Ladies' Guild held a meeting in the Kahutara Hall recently, Mrs J. Came Bidwill presiding. Owing to sickness and the school holidays, the attendance was rather disappointing. Miss Cock, of Pirinoa, gave a very interesting talk on her trip to England via Panama, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. At the conclusion of the meeting, afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Collins, Humphrey and Pound. Lake Very High. The lake is at present very high, and it is feared may become blocked with the southerly which commenced yesterday. Heavy rain fell throughout the day, with the result that rivers are somewhat swollen. Several local sportsmen made a hurried visit to the lake yesterday in order to retrieve their boats and haul them to a place of safety. Football Teams.
