LONDON, May 9. The Swedish newspaper “Social Demokraten" pays a tribute to British demorcacy, remarking that it is not for Sweden to reproach a country which has, without even being asked, come to the aid of a stricken small nation—something more than Sweden, her neighbour, could do. The most impressive result of the debate has been the evidence that Britain is determined to take the war far more earnestly than before.
The ‘‘New York Times” comments that notice has been served on Mr Chamberlain and his colleagues that they are on trial not only by their own people, but by those of France. The Government has won a reprieve after a battering more violent than anything it had previously experienced. The “New York Post” draws a comparison between a divided and uncertain England and a Germany working to a fixed schedule. At the same time it expresses appreciation of the fundamental unity of England, stating that at no time in the debate was there a thought other than that the war must be waged with the utmost determination.
