DISTRICT DRENCHED
SUBSTANTIAL FALL OF RAIN.
BENEFIT TO PASTURES. The Wairarapa district is at present being well soaked with much-needed rain, which, fortunately, has not been heavy enough to cause any flooding of consequence, beyond the accumulation of surface water at some points. The rivers which rise in the Tararuas are surprisingly low in spite of the rain but those in the East Coast area are in heavier flood, though nothing untoward has been reported. Road and rail communications remain undisturbed. A fair-sized slip is reported on the Wellington side of the Rimutaka Hill Road but the highway is not blocked. Reports from other parts of the North Island indicate that the heaviest rain for some months has fallen in Hawke’s Bay. At Waipukurau inches were recorded in 24 hours. AROUND CARTERTON. LOW-LYING AREAS FLOODED. (“Times-Age” Special.) At Swamp Road the water is across the road, but has not prevented factory suppliers getting out. During the night the convergence of the water in the Waidhine and Maungatarei'e Rivers caused the main highway to be flooded, but this morning it had gone down somewhat. At Dalefield the Maungatarere River overflowed its banks in low-lying places, and the roadway between the railway and almost to the cheese factory was flooded, but it. was passable.
