BADMINTON
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES
ANNUAL REPORT FOR PAST YEAR.
REPRESENTATIVE AND OTHER MATCHES.
Following is the annual report of the Wairarapa Badminton Association to bo presented at the annual meeting, to bo held in Masterton on Tuesday. May 14. The report is signed by the president. Mr. E. K. Eastwood, and the secretary, Mr. C. J. Carle, and states inter alia: —
“Cn the whole a successful Reason has been experienced, and from a financial point of view the association is in a stronger position than ever before. The representative activities of the association have been full and apparently were an enjoyable experience to those taking part. A noteworthy innovation was the institution of a colts match with the Wellington association, which resulted in a win for Wellington by a narrow margin. This match was referred to in the annual report of the New Zealand Badminton Federation, and appears to have set a precedent. The A team was successful in a match against Wellington at Masterton. and acquitted itself well in the inter-provincial tournament played at Palmerston North. The B team played at Palmerston North and at Hastings against the Manawatu and Hawke's Bay associations respectively. Although defeated the teams put up a very good showing. The following gained representative honours during the season: —A Grade: Messrs. P. Hawksworth, J. Lulham. J. J. Payton, P. Martin, H. M. O'Connor. J. Dwane. A. Stubbings; Mesdames P. Hawksworth. D. Young: Misses D. Allen. B. Payton. N. Rishworth. L. Hosking, B. Grade: Messrs. F. D. G. Walker. G. W. McCullough. G. B. Peterson, H. Dixon B. M. Hurley. C. Newland, C. J. Carle. C. A. Greenwood, R. Doggett. K. Brader; Misses N. C. Richards. E. Madsen M. Bell, N. Yates. H. Brown, G. McCormick, U. Holtham. E. Wickens and Mrs. 11. Dixon.
“As a means of supplementing its funds the association conducted an art union during the year, the proceeds being partly allocated towards the assistance of representative players. It is pleasing to record that this initial art union venture was entirely successful. Regretfully we must admit that the fifth" annual Wairarapa Championship and Handicap Tournament held in the Drill-Hall from July 26 to July 29 was not up to the standard set by previous tournaments, this being due to a serious fall in entries arising apparently out of the lack of interest shown by affiliated clubs. The general playing standard of those taking part compared favourably with that of previous seasons.
The results .were:— Championship Events:—Ladies singles, Miss D. McCarthy (New Plymouth); men's singles, Mr. J. Lulham; ladies doubles, Mrs. D. Young and Miss Nan Rishworth; mens doubles, Messrs J. J. Payton and J. Lulham; combined doubles, Miss D. Allen and Mr. J. J. P.ayton. Handicaps:—Mens A Grade singles, Mr. F. D. G. Walker; ladies A Grade singles, Miss Nan Dixon; mens A Grade doubles, Messrs McCullough and Walker: ladies A Grade doubles. Misses McCarthy and Cohen (New Plymouth); combined A Grade doubles, Miss D. Allen and Mr. J. J. Pay ton; ladies B grade doubles, Misses Richards and Yates; mens E Grade doubles. Messrs. N. Faulknor and P. Cardno; combined doubles. Miss V. Gosnell and Mr. W. Jones.
“A serious decline over the past season 'is shown in the affiliated figures, the total membership of clubs affiliated to the association being 2G4, compared with 222 in 1938. and 307 in 1937. Nine clubs are affiliated, against 10 last year. Details of club membership arc:— Hugo's. 22, (0); Featherston. 20 (20); Martin’borough, 20, (25); Masterton 34. (31); Methodist. 22, (27); Nomads. 30. (30); Red Star. 15, (16); Regent, 15, (14); St. Matthews, 26 (22): total, 204. (222). A and B Grade inter-club competitions were played during the season Masterton again winning the A Grade and Red Star the B Grade. Congratulations are due to Mr. and Mrs. Hawksworth. who were selected as. New Zealand's representatives on the first occasion this Dominion has played Australia in Australia for the Whyte Trophy. We also congratulate Mr.' and Mrs. Hawksworth on their successes in the New Zealand championships. In conclusion, we offer our thanks to our honorary auditor, Mr. N. H. James, F.P.A.N.Z.. Sergeant-Major C. E. Rogers, of the Defence Department. for his courteous attention; the Press for publicity; to those who assisted with the art union; to the officials of the Wellington. Manawatu and Hawke's Bay associations for their hospitality extended to our representatives on the occasion of inter-provincial matches. Since the Drill Hall will no longer be available to clubs or for representative matches, it is obvious that the coming season is not going to be without its difficulties. The situation calls for very careful consideration at the annual meeting.”
