“YEOMAN OF THE GUARD”
A NEW STAR. No matter how many times you have seen it, when the curtain is raised oh “Yeoman of the Guard,” and Phoebe Meryll is discovered with her spinning-wheel, singing “When Maiden Loves She sits and Sighs,” you know you are in for a good time, says a writer in the “Sydney Sun.” The “first night” of this lovely Gilbert and Sullivan opera was no exception to 'the rule. It was specially noteworthy because of the discovery of a new Phoebe. Peggy Shea, a Melbourne business girl, making her first professional appearance in this role, captured the bouse with her opening number, and thereafter never let it go. Peggy started out on a commercial career but, having a love for the stage, filled in her spare time playing leading parts in amateur musical productions. Frank Tait saw her, and lured her on to the professional stage.
