BUSINESS AT ANNUAL MEETING.
(‘■Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton Branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society held its annual meeting in the Methodist Church
Hall on Wednesday afternoon, the Rev A. Daglish presiding. The Rev W. J. ■ 'fouling and Captain O. L. Ojala were ilso present. ■ After the usual devotions, the min- ■ ' utes of the last meeting were read by the chairman in the absence of Mrs R. Brown, retiring secretary. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Captain O. L. Ojala, vice-presidents, Revs W. F. Stent, J. A. Daglish and W. J. Couling; secretary, Miss L. H. Edwards; committee, Mesdames Stent, Daglish, Couling. Ojala, Every, Peters, Udy and Tyler. Mrs Violet Wakelin, of the Bible House, Wellington, gave a comprehensive address on the work of the Society in foreign parts and emphasised the additional expense facing the Socity, in connection with the provision of Scriptures for our own Troops and for prisoners of war of varied nationalities. The new avenues opening for providing the Bible for the Russian people, where the Book has so long been banned were mentioned. Collecting books were distributed and July 31 fixed as the final date for collecting. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs Hunt and Mrs Nightingale and a vote of thanks was passed to these ladies and the speaker . It is hoped that Carterton residents will be generous in their donations to this good work which supplements that of the Red dross Society. GOLF CARTERTON MEN'S CLUB. Corlet and Miss Beaven; Miss Lawrence and Miss Shankland; Miss Sorensen and Miss Lane. Mrs Candy and Mrs Colson are hostesses for the afternoon. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT PARKVALE. The monthlj' meeting of the Parkvale Women's Institute was held in the Parkvale Hall yesterday afternoon, Mrs B. Renall presiding over a large attendance of members .and visitors. Apologies were received from Mesdames C. V. Downes and T. King. Invitations were received from the Kahautara and Pirinoa Institutes to attend their annual birthday parties. Delegates were appointed to represent the Institute. Arrangements were made for the annual husbands' night to be held on Friday, June 7. It was decided to spend the pool money to cover expenses at the Dominion Conference to be held in Wellington for four days in July. Mrs W. Adlam will represent the Institute. Mrs N. Peacock gave- an interesting account of the council meeting held last month at Masterion and was accorded a vole of thanks. Mrs J. Taplin kindly offered to donate a fruit cake for competition for the husband's night function for which she was thanked. The Institute decided to forward a letter of thanks to the Rev W. F. Stent for a donation of gladioli bulbs to be distributed among members. Mr Stent also offered to give a lecture at one of the monthly meetings on the cultivation of the bulbs. It was decided to hold back two sets of Air Force comforts for purpose of donating them to any local recruit who entered the Air Force. Miss J. Moncl’ieff, of Carterton, judged the monthly competitions for which she was accorded a vote of thanks and presented with a shoulder spray. There was a large entry of knitted comforts for airmen, and lhe awards were made in the competition as follows: Balaclavas, Mrs W. Adlam 1; Miss E. Brassci 2; Miss J. Court 3. Scarves. Mrs D. Adams 1; Mrs R. Williams 2; Mrs N. Peacock 3. Gloves. Mrs B. Renall 1. Flowers: Best chrysanthemum. Mrs L. Rayner 1: Mrs R. Williams 2; Mrs J. Taplin 3. Juniors, biscuits for soldiers, Miss A. Williams 1; Miss J. Warrington 2; Miss S. Rayner 3. Flowers, three best chrysanthemums. Miss A. "Williams 1; Miss S. Rayner 2; Miss J. Warrington 3. An interesting demonstration of the
making of silk mats made on frames was given by Miss E. Bliss, who explained each section of the making. Her remarks were followed with interest by members and she was accorded a vote of thanks and presented with a shoulder spray. A competition arranged by Mrs L. Nolan was won by Mrs M. McKinnon. Another arranged by Miss M. Adlam was won by Mrs D. Adams. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames McKenzie and E. McGarvie and Misses E. Martin and A. Williams. Bible Class Girls. Members- of St Mark's Anglican Church Girls' Bible Class held a very enjoyable dance in the Parish Hall on Tuesday night in aid of the church funds. There was a good attendance and as a result the funds of the church should materially benefit. The Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by Mr M. Rose and Miss B. Hemi. Supper was provided. Much appreciated extras were played by Miss R. Hopkins and Mr L. Martin, while Miss V. Thomas was heartily applauded for a well rendered vocal item. First-class dance music was played by Mrs V. J. Ashton, and Mr C. C. Deller was an efficient M.C. Personal. Mr Cliff Abbott, of Dalefield, left today for Hanmer Springs, where he will undergo medical treatment. Baby Carnival. Last evening saw the final voting in connection with the South Wairarapa Baby Carnival in its first stage. The result of the carnival will not be divulged until the coronation takes place tonight at the Regent Theatre. The Mayoress. Mrs D. L. Taverner has kindly agreed to perform the crowning of the successful baby and there is sure to be a large attendance at the theatre on the occasion. Considerable rivalry has taken place over the successful issue, and it is expected some surprise will be the result at tonight’s function.
