MIDLAND LINE
BLOCKED BY BIG SLIPS MAY BE CLEARED TONIGHT. EXPRESS AND OTHER TRAINS HELD UP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Big slips on the Midland Line between The Staircase and Avoca this morning made rail communication between Christchurch and the West Coast imposible today, and the Department did not expect to have the line cleared until late tonight. An express passenger train was despatched from Christchurch at 11 o'clock, an hour later than usual, but it travelled only as far as Springfield. The extent of the slips on the line was so great that transhipment of passengers was considered impracticable. The train from Greymouth this morning was scheduled only to run to Arthur’s Pass.
