OLD LAND MARK SCHOOL RESIDENCE BEING DEMOLISHED. The residence at the school grounds at South Carterton, after having been a home for schoolmasters'since 1879, is being demolished by the Wairarapa Joinery and Cabinet Co., Ltd., of which Mr W. S. King is manager. After 61 years the timber in the building is as good today as it was when the house was erected. The studs are of 6 x 4 heart of totara, the joists of rimu and look like newly sawn timber. A few of the weather boards show signs of decay, and that portion of the piles which is in the ground is slightly affected by dry rot. It is interesting to ■ note that while the school itself was first opened in 1861 the timber used was pit sawn and supplied by late Messrs Cadwallader and Bambry from the property now occupied by Mr A. H. Callister, of Brooklyn Road. The first teacher was Miss Eli-j zabeth Anderson (afterwards Mrs Thos. Moore), who taught the scholars until 1862, when she was succeeded by Mrs Jones. On May 8, 1879, the school residence was finished and was first occupied by Mr C. A. Richards (headmaster). Carterton Flour Mill. The Carterton flour mill which has been in existence since 1869 and which was originally established by the late Mr Edward Louth Wakelin is at present receiving a coat of paint. For 71 years the flour mill has been grinding wheat grown in the Wairarapa and other places and supplied the wants of the Wairarapa for many years. Today Carterton’s ’‘Golden Cream” flour is a household word in many parts of the North Island. After the death of Mr Wakelin Senr., the mill was carried on lor some years by his two sons, Messrs Edward Louth and James A. Wakelin, who are novz both dead, but the wife of the late Mr E. L. Wakelin still retains an interest in the mill, which since 1920, has been conducted as a limited liability company, known as Wakelin Bros. Ltd. Mr L. H. Smart is the chairman of directors and Mr H. Mortensen is secretary. Personal Items. Mrs Thompson, of Dannevirke, who has been visiting Wellington, is at present in Carterton and is staying with her sister, Mrs W. Wadham, Brooklyn Road. Tankersley, is at present Attached to the Y.M.C.A. military hut- ' ’’Sljent at Trentham. Miss G. Every, of Okau, is spending the school vacation with her parents. Baby Carnival.
