BATTLE IN DUBLIN
BETWEEN DETECTIVES & I.R.A. SUSPECTS ATTEMPT TO SEIZE MAILS. SUB-MACHINE-GUNS USED BY BANDITS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 9.25 a.m.) DUBLIN, May 7. A desperate battle, between detectives and six men, believed to be members of the 1.R.A., armed with sub-machine-guns, occurred in the centre of Dublin, when an attempt was made to seize mails being conveyed to the office of the British Representative, Sir John M affey. The detectives were escorting the mails on motor-cycles when the gang opened fire near Merrion Square and the detectives flung themselves to the ground and replied with revolvers. The rattle of the machine-gun fire sent bystanders flying for cover. Two detectives were seriously wounded, one having his revolver shot from bis hand. One bandit was left lying in the roadway but the rest of the gang escaped in an automobile.
