The Mackenzie County Council has established what is believed to be the first county library service in the Dominion. Approval has been given by the Minister for Education for an extension of the country library service, previously available only to borough councils, to the Mackenzie Council. The council increased its grant to the library by £lOO to allow the introduction of the scheme. At the monthly meeting of the council, Mr G. T. Alley, officer in charge of the service, wrote that 600 books were available immediately as a deposit if the council introduced the service. A satisfactory standard of library service would be achieved if the council increased its present grant to the Fairlie library from £l5O to £250. Members agreed to increase the grant. The whole county will benefit and a system of supply to libraries in the smaller centres at Cave, Albury, and Tekapo will be devised.
