BUTTER RATION

EARLY REDUCTION POSSIBLE IN BRiTAIN.

MINISTER ISSUES WARNING. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.43 a.m.) RUGBY, May 6. The Minister for Food today warned the public of the possibility that the butter ration might be reduced at an early date. He said: “I have no doubt that we shall have adequate supplies drawn from within the Empire for the rest of the year. The important thing for us to consider is not how much of any particular article there is in England at the moment, but how much there would be in the event of all sorts of disadvantageous circumstances arising in the future.” It may be recalled that the original butter ration was doubled shortly after its introduction.

In telling the public to be prepared for an early reduction in the butter ration, to four ounces a week, the Minister- said this was due to the stoppage of Danish supplies. If the ration were reduced to the former level he did not doubt that the Government would obtain adequate supplies form the Empire which would make them safe for at least the remainder of the year. Although cold storage facilities at present were adequate, new stores were being built in eight different parts of the country, in order to meet eventualities.
