S. H. Crowhurst, Trentham. wafe a weekend guest at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton.
The death at the age of 69 of Mr. Sydney Elliott Napier, journalist and author, is reported in a cablegram from Sydney. Sergeant-Pilot T. W. Horton is spending his leave with his parents, Mr and Mrs T. H. Horton, Upper Plain, Masterton.
Two recreational officers for Auckland have been appointed by the Internal Affairs Department. They are Mr J. C. Bonham, formerly physical director of the Auckland Y.M.C.A.. and Miss Gladys M. Gebbie, former captain of the Auckland women's cricket team.
The Ven Archdeacon W. Bullock, Archdeacon of Wellington, who entered a private hospital in March for an eye operation, is reported to be making very good progress. It is expected that it will be about a month, however, before he is able to resume full duties. The Rev Father Peter Waters, O.F.M. from the Franciscan Friary, Auckland, is visiting Masterton to conduct an eight-day retreat for the Sisters of St. Bride's Convent, commencing today. The sisters from the Pahiatua, Foxton. and Carterton convents will also be in Masterton to make the retreat. The death occurred on Saturday in Marton of Mr Percy Halswell Wood, a well-known resident of the town, aged 65 years. Mr Wood was >.a member of a well-known North Canterbury family, and was himself among the first settlers on the Cheviot estate. In later years he had been associated with the land .and estate agency business in Marton. Mr Wood leaves a widow and three daughters. Misses Helen, Margaret, and Tui Wood, and one son, Mr John Wood, a Hawke's Bay farmer. Mr William .Yates. Wellington, has been appointed secretary of the National Breadcasting Service. He has had long experience in accountancy, departmental administration, and the arrangement and presentation of broadcast programmes. Coming to New Zealand from England in 1912. he joined the Education Department in 1914. He was appointed accountant to the first Unemployment Board in 1930. and in 1934 he joined the Broadcasting Board as supervisor of plays. ; , The Air Ministry announces the appointment of Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur M. Longmore to succeed Air Chief Marshal Sir William G. S. Mitchell as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief the R.A.F. in the Middle East as from May 20. a British Official Wireless message states. Sir Arthur Longmore. who whas born in New South Wales in 1885. visited Australia and New Zealand in 1939 as a member of the British Air Mission.
