RED CROSS SOCIETY

MEETING OF MASTERTON SUB-BRANCH. MANY ACTIVITIES UNDER WAY. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Sub-branch of the Red Cross Society was held in the Lecture Room. Municipal Buildings: the president, Mrs. G. G. Tolhurst, presided over a large attendance. Apologies for absence were received from:—Mesdames Alexander, Hugo, Cleghorn: Misses H. Gill, A. Daily; and Messrs Thompson, Farrell and Jones. The following members were elected to the executive committee:—Hospital group, Mrs. A. F. Stewart; refugee group, Mrs. J. G. S. Thompson; knitting group. Mrs. Flannery. A buying committee for the hospital group was elected as follows: —Mesdames H. H. Daniell. A. McKenzie and Gill; secretary. Miss Jessie Cooper. Refugee group:—Mesdames H. M. Major, Flannery and C. Cook. As the work of the branch had grown enormously it had been found necessary to appoint an assistant secretary. Miss P. Gill accepted the position. The Masterton Sub-centre had appointed Miss R. Elliott as secretary of the Wairarapa centre. The three delegates to represent the Masterton' Sub-centre on the Wairarapa Centre are:—Mrs. Pither; Messrs. Coddington and Ninnes. The following members representing the schools were co-opted to the general committee: —Central school: Mr. Coddington; west school, Mr. Farrell; Lansdowne school, Mr. Jones; Kopuaranga school, Miss Kane. Mr. J. Kennedy was also elected to act on the general committee. The Kopuaranga School, which was the first to join the Junior Red Cross in its entirely, was represented by Miss D. Fennimore. The first effort of the school had been the collecting of 30 bags of cones, which were sold in Masterton in aid of the Red Cross funds. A motion was passed asking Miss Fennimore to convey hearty congratulations from the meeting to her school fellows for the effort they had made. The motion was carried with acclamation. The sum of £4 65.. the result of a concert and a cake raffled, were also received from St. Matthew s Collegiate School. A motion thanking the school for its contribution was passed with acclamation. With regard to the Junior Red Cross, two prizes have been donated, first £1 Is., and second 10s. 6d., for the best garment made from an old garment, to be available for entry by any member of the Junior Red Cross. The garments were to be the property of the Red Cross. Mrs. Tolhurst outlined the work done by the three groups; Hospital supplies, refugee sewing, knitting. The refugees group had had three meetings in Messrs Hugo and Shearer’s oak room, and as a result two cases of warrn clothing, in all numbering 631 garments, had been despatched to headquarters for Finland. The hospital group had had its first meeting on Monday, April 29. in the Oak Room, and many useful hospital requirements were made. The knitting group had had three meetings, and in future all meetings for this group would be held at the home of Mrs. Page. Essex Street, on Wednesday at 2 p.m., except on the third Wednesday, when the meeting's would be held in the evening The speaker for the evening will be Mrs. R. Miller. Kopuranga. 'Her subject will be: "Belgium. Mrs. Madden and Miss Burling had consented to look after the afternoon, tea. and Mrs S. Burling had ocered to donate all biscuits for this group. A vote of thanks to Mrs. Burling was passed. With reference to the mechanics class, there had been over 30 applications for the course, and 20 were to commence on Wednesday. May 8, at the Ford Motors, at 7 p.m. Fees for this course were 7s. 6d. for six two-hour lessons. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Fagan for his assistance in making this class possible. The offer of the inter-house girls to give a dance in aid of local Red Cross funds was accepted with thanks. Votes of thanks were passed to the following' for donations and assistance: —Mr. Young, of Messrs. Fly and Young, for distributing the cones collected by the Kopuaranga school; Mr. Hewitt, and Mr. Miller for transporting same. Townswomens Guild. Upper Plain Institute. Wairarapa College. Masterton West school, and all other donors for the handsome donations of clothes, new and old, for the refugee groups, and to all those who had donated linen, beads, cotton and materials for the hospital group. Donations had been received from Mr. Lee. Mrs. Fagan. Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Payton. Miss Oates. Miss Maunsell. Misses H. and B. Vallance Mrs. Van Praagh. Mrs. G. Elliott. Mrs. J. Elliott. Mrs. E. H. Morton. Miss Sutherland. Thanks were also due to Messrs Bullick-Black-more. Levin and Company. Mr. Howard (Yates store), and C. Smith. Ltd., for cases.
