Reference to the withdrawal cf the Allies from Southern Norway was made at tho annual conference cf the Mew Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, and a resolution was carried urging the introduction of compulsory universal national service in the Dominion. The president, the Hon. W. Perry, said the Empire had reached a crisis in its existence, and it was the duty of returned soldiers to give a lead in asking for a maximum effort from the Dominion. The loss of the war would mean more to New Zealand than to Britain, because the Dominion would become a German colony. The resolution stated that the Returned Soldiers' Association was emphatically of the opinion that to obtain a maximum effort and an earlier and to the present hostilities, it was imperative to demand equality of sacrifice and that this could only bo obtained by a national register and compulsory national service. Speakers pointed out that the voluntary system was only bringing in the men required at present, and that those enlisting were bearing the burden for all others. The resolution was carried unanimously.
