Mr. J. Wylie, of Jean Street, Masterton, is paying a short visit to Wellington. Dr. C. E. Beeby, Director of Education, has been appointed a member of the Teachers’ Superannuation Board. The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral, left Wellington for Auckland by the Limited express last night. He will return to Wellington tomorrow. Sir Francis Frazer and Mr. G. A. Duncan have been reappointed members of the Executive Commission of Agriculture. Sir Francis has also been reappointed deputy-chairman of the commission. Messrs G. Ferguson (Stratford), A. E. Allison (Palmerston North), S. Freeman, E. E. Cole, E. Moss, A. McCarllie and C. P. Coveney (Wellington), were recent guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton. Captain W. E. Parry, C. 8., R.N., of H.M.S. Achilles, has been appointed to the rank of Commodore Second Class as first naval member of the New Zealand Naval Board, Chief of the Naval Stall’, and Commodore Commanding New Zealand Squadron, while continuing in command of H.M.S. Achilles, to date May 1, 1940. In making this announcement yesterday, the Minister of Defence. Mr. Jones, said that Commodore Horan had relinquished the rank of commodore, but was continuing in command of H.M.S. Leander in the rank of captain. The death occurred recently of Mr. Harvey Benjamin Cooper, of Levin. Mr. Cooper, who was in his 81st year was born in Stockton, Surrey, and arrived at Lyttelton with his parents in 1864. He spent his early life in Lyttelton, and eventually came to the North Island, taking up land at Pahiatua in the early ’eighties with his brother the late Mr. Ross Cooper. On leaving Pahiatua he followed farming pursuits at Muhunia East, Ohau. for seme time, subsequently joining the staff of the Horowhenua County Council. Mr. Cooper lived in Levin for about 30 years and is survived by his widow, six sons and two daughters. The death occurred suddenly on Wednesday evening of Mr. George S. Luttrell. licensee of the Carlton Club Hotel, Hastings. Born in Tasmania in 1886, Mr. Luttrell came to New Zealand about 30 years ago and soon after settled in Hastings, where he set up business in the building trade, being the principal of the partnership of Duncan and Luttrell. After retiring from this concern he went to Sydney, where he remained for about two years before returning to Hastings 12 years ago. He eventually took over control of the Carlton Club Hotel. He was the owner of several well-known racehorses. In partnership with Mi - . C. 11. Slater ho successfully raced Tygrina and later in partnership with Mr. W. J. Cameron ho raced Chant. Royal. In recent years he raced Hastings West and Golden Melody and the steeplechaser Iddo among other horses.
