AUCKLAND WEST SEAT
CANDIDATE WITHDRAWN.
LIBERAL PARTY'S ATTITUDE.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 2.
The by-election to fill the vacant seat in Auckland West, created by the death of Mr Savage, will not be contested by the New Zealand Liberal Party, and the nomination, of its official candidate, Mr J. B. Kennedy, will be withdrawn.
This decision was reached by the Auckland executive at a meeting tonight. The executive’s reasons for this decision were explained in an official statement detailing resolutions adopted by the executive.
The first held that New Zealand’s first duty was to give Britain her maximum support in the war and the Government was urged to discharge its full responsibility by positive efforts and by abstaining from contentious domestic legislation that would provoke dissension while the Empire is at war. It was also resolved that with a view to assisting the Government in its task all political parties should be urged' to observe a wartime truce in mere domestic issues and concentrate on the nation’s war sacrifice.
