MAGISTRATE’S COURT

i BUSINESS AT MASTERTON SITTING. MOTORING AND OTHER CASES. The fortnightly sitting of the Maslerton Magistrate's Court was held this morning, Air 11. P. Lawry, S.M., being on the Bench. The following business was dealt with: — Charged with casting offensive matter in a public place (Queen Street), on April 10. 1940. Thomas Backhouse was fined £1 and 10s costs. Neil Edward Cundy was fined £2 and 10s costs on a charge of driving a motor vehicle on the Te Ore Ore Road, Masterton. on March 26, without due care and attention. "Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett stated that the charge arose out of an accident which had occurred at the intersection of Totara Street and Te Ore Ore Road when a county council employee was injured through being thrown off a county lorry which had had to swerve suddenly to avoid 'colliding with the defendant’s car. The defendant had given every assistance, s and had entered a plea of guilty. Mr W. G. Milne, of the Transport Department, prosecuted in the following cases. John William Thornton Junr., was fined £1 10s and 10s.costs on a charge of being the owner of a heavy motor

vehicle and licensed under Class G. he did operate the vehicle on the Master-ton-Stronvar Main Highway on March 18. while the load then carried on the vehicle exceeded the maximum load for which it was licensed. Albert James Snelgrove was charged that on March 23. at Masterton he was the licensee of a passenger-service licence and did carry on a passenger-

service between Masterton and Greytown other than in conformity with the terms of such license in that the time-table specified was not adhered to. The defendant, who was represented by Mr S. V. Gooding, pleaded guilty, and was fined £2 and 10s costs. The offence occurred on a race day. Charged with driving a vehicle at Solway on March 31 without having a warrant of fitness, Muriel Cooper was fined 10s and 10s costs. CIVIL BUSINESS. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the foilowing undefended civil cases: — Wairarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Association Ltd. v. H. Cowan, claim £3 7s Gd, costs £ 1 5s 6d; J. C. Ewington v. E. T. H. Udy. claim £l6 4s 4d, costs £2 14s; do. v. F. H. Morris, claim 12s fid. costs 3s; Para Rubber Co. Ltd. v. H. Denney, claim £7 4s 9d, costs £1 its 6d; do. v. A. H. Goss, claim 12s. costs 10s; W. E. Cody Ltd. v. H. S. Robinson, claim £3 15s Gd, costs £1 13s (Id; Avon Cecil Talton and Stanley Lyell Talton v. B. R. Way Ltd., claim £.1.3 7s, costs £2 14s; Wairarapa Radios Ltd. v. C. M. Whyte, claim £l3 6s sd, costs £2 14s. The following judgment summonses were made:-— R. J. M. Ten-ill was ordered to pay Hodder and Tolley Ltd. forthwith the sum of £9 18s -Id, in default 9 days' imprisonment in Wellington prison. Charles Tyackc was ordered to pay Edwin Sims (Junr.) the sum of £4 2s Gd forthwith, in default 4 days' imprisonment.

T. Newland was ordered to pay AV. G. Wilton the sum of £4 5s Id forthwith, in default 3 days' imprisonment. F. W. Morley was ordered to pay Rees Ramsden Lid. the sum of £4 3s 3d. in default 4 days’ imprisonment.
