WAIKINO TRAGEDY
YOUNG MAN ARRESTED MURDER CHARGE LAID. REPORTED DISCOVERY OF DAMAGED CAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. May 1. 1 The Waikino tragedy look a sensational turn at Waikino tonight when the Commissioner of Police, Mr Cummings, announced the arrest of Douglas Herbert Cartman. aged 22, a single man, on a charge of murdering Alice Elizabeth Hamilton at Waikino on April 2. Accused was employed as a trucker at Martha Goldmine and was arrested by Detective-Sergeants Thompson and Walsh at 9 o’clock. Cartman will be brought before Justices of the Peace at the local court tomorrow morning, and the police will ask for a remand for him to appear in Auckland soon. For several days investigation has been conducted under the direct supervision of Mr Cummings, and today Superintendent Cummings, of Auckland, was at Waikino to assist. Though Superintendent Cummings had not previously appeared on the scene, he had taken an active interest in the proceedings, and had made a series of valuable suggestions. It is understood that the police recently found an old motor-car with a damaged headlamp and a tiny piece of flesh and hair adhering to the underneath part of the chassis. The car was in a garage and the police took possession of-it. REMAND GRANTED ACCUSED MAN TO APPEAR IN AUCKLAND. WAIHI, This Day. A remand to Auckland until next Monday was granted when Douglas Herbert Cartman. a single man, aged 22, a trucker in the Martha gold mine, appeared before J.’sP. today charged with the murder at Waikino on April 2 of Alice Elizabeth Hamilton, married woman, aged 26. whose body was found next morning in scrub by the ■wayside on the Waikino-Wa'itiwheta Road, three miles from the spot where the body of Lloyd Moran, aged fifteen, had been found some hours earlier. Detective-Sergeant Thompson told the Court that a further remand would be asked for next Monday.
