MILITARY POSITION
NO SUBSTANTIAL CHANGE ACCORDING TO BRITISH INFORMATION. NO CONFIRMATION OF ENEMY CLAIMS. , (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) RUGBY, May 1. The military position in Norway has undergone no substantial change during the past 24 hours. In Narvik the only development is that the Allied troops are now closer to the town. In the Namsos area, according to a report dated yesterday, the situation was good, and there is no reason to suppose that it has since deteriorated. Desultory bombing is going on between Stankjaer and Namsos. According to German claims both Storen and Dombas are in enemy hands, but there is no confirmation of this here. SOUTHERN FRONT SITUATION DANGEROUS FATE OF DOMBAS AND STOREN UNCERTAIN. (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) LONDON, May 1. It is authoritatively stated that the situation on the southern front in Norway is dangerous. There is no confirmation in London that the Germans have occupied Dombas and Storen, but military circles state that the report may be true, although probably only small parties from Oslo have linked up with those from Trondheim, and for this reason it is likely that the Germans have outrun their lines of communication. The Allies’ advance at Narvik continues, and they are closer to the port than they were yesterday. The Namsos situation, is good, and there was desultory bombing between Namsos and Stenkaer. WAR OFFICE REPORT MORE FIGHTING IN. DOMBAS AREA. WITHDRAWAL TO PREPARED POSITIONS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day 9.50 a.m.) RUGBY, May 1. A War Office communique, issued at 4.10 p.m., says: “At Narvik the areas occupied by the Allied forces have been extended and operations are continuing satisfactorily. “In the Namsos area the situation at the front remains unchanged. “In the Dombas area our troops, after stubborn resistance in the face of strong enemy attacks, withdrew to prepared positions.” IN THE OSTER VALLEY GERMANS RETIRE FROM ROROS. NORWEGIAN PURSUIT. (Received This Day 10.40 a.m.) LONDON. May 1. The British United Press Stockholm correspondent says the Germans have withdrawn from Roros and taken up positions southwards of the town. Norwegian patrols are reported to be pursuing.
