SEATS REMOVED

FROM OUTSIDE GOVERNMENT OFFICES. REASONS FOR ACTION INDICATED Resentment has been caused in certain circles by the -removal of two seats from outside the Government offices in Lincoln Road. According to the mayor, Mr T. Jordan, departmental officers objected to the seats on several grounds and he had personally looked into the matter, and considered that the position was unsatisfactory. He had therefore agreed that the seats should be removed, with the sanction of the Masterton Beautifying Society and the Department had been good enough to remove them and take them to the Hospital entrance, free of cost. It is understood that objections were raised because of the bad language used by certain men using the seats, because their conversations were annoying to officers in the nearby rooms, and because telephone talks could be overheard by those outside. It was <. stated also that there had been a dan- J ger to health on account of expectoration, and in other ways. ‘ The seats have been set up- at the entrance to the Hospital. It is understood that the Beautifying Society is making inquiries as to the possibility of placing seats at other convenient points in town, such as on the church land, behind Mr H. E. Pither's shop, and on a section in William Street, near the Cosy Theatre.
