TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Wild Talk Should Be Heard Of Again (BY “THE GRAFTER.") Wild Talk registered tier third success of the season when she took the Timaru Cup for which she was the each way favourite. Wild Talk is highly rated in the south and possesses both courage and stamina and should be heard of again shortly. Her previous success was in the Sockburn Handicap at Riccarton last month over nine furlongs. Her effort in that race was a splendid one for she had a lot of ground to make up in the last half furlong and she got up in time to snatch victory by a head. Wild Talk is a four-year-old by Winning Hit from Babe, by The Ace from Scrimmage, dam of Fracas and Trench Fight. It is stated that she is due to do some racing in the North Island before long.
Captain Bruce’s Record. In 11 starts this season Captain Bruce got amongst the money for the first time this season when he ran second at Timaru. He scored his only win last season at the Christchurch Hunt Club's meeting. Novice Hurdlers. A horse with a turn of speed and keen to gallop very frequently develops into a good hurdler. When educated to jump his pace makes him fly the hurdle and get away well into his stride. At Timaru Guilder and Far East were running about at each flight of hurdles, but their pace kept them in charge of the field. < Guilder flew the second last flight and made one good jump, but crashed at the next. Far East managed ■ to get over the hurdles and finally won from Ballad, who was giving 351 b to a horse capable of.getting over a mile and ahalf in 2min 44 l-ssec on a slow track. Both Guilder and Far East should improve with experience, and Master Dingle may also make a useful addition to the ranks of hurdlers. Big and Little Bets. Mr R. Jansen, who for many years has been leader of the Victorian betting ring, was recently approached by a soldier at Ascot and was asked to | lay the odds to 2s Cd about a horse. I "I’ll bet you to a shilling if you like,” | he said, as he noticed the uniform, i Yet it is not many years ag0 —1932 in fact—that Mr Jansen laid a cash bet of £32,000 to £750 against Mulcra for the Caulfield Cup. Mulcra did not finish in the first 12. Mr Jansen told me (says a Melbourne writer) that the largest cash wager he had laid . and paid was £5OOO to £5OO about a winner at Randwick. The smallest amount he has received was threepence from a woman who backed First Acre for the Melbourne Cup of 1930. He laid her £5OO to that amount —and would have been very pleased to have Jost. That was the year Phar •Lap won, and Mr Jansen paid out £4.0.000 over his success. ..Sleeveless Doing Well. Sleeveless is doing everything right on the tracks, and her prospects of being in the money in early engagements look good. She worked well over seven furlongs at Awapuni yesterday, Aurora’s Love joining in at the five. Without being bustled, they finished their task in 1.35.
