SOCK MAKING
WATCH THESE POINTS. Many hours are spent at every patriotic centre undoing, partly or wholly, faulty socks. Follow these extra tips carefully if you don't want to have comforts depot helpers finishing off your sock for you. (1) Shrink all wool for socks before winding. Tie the skein in several places and steep in warm to hot water. Leave till cold, squeeze gently and hang on line overnight. (2) Tops must be strong, but elastic. and should stretch easily to 16 inches. If you find it tricky casting on loosely, use No. 3 needles for the first two rows, (3) Think of the last painful blister on your foot if you are tempted to knot wools to join them. Best way to avoid lumps in the texture, which may be painful even under puttees, is to unravel the wool for 2 inches, place over unravelled end of new skein and knit both together for several stitches. Lightly darn in ends. (4) Follow special rules given below for grafting in finishing off toe. Do not graft tightly as toe must be as elastic as rest of sock. (5) To allow for varying sizes of feet, it is desirable to make, for every two of the standard foot length til inches), one of lO.’, inches, and one of 111 inches. Grafting. One of the trickiest jobs in knitting a sock is the grafting of the toe. Careless grafting puts ridges into the toe. which, if passed by the comforts depots, would lame a soldier. The following simplified method is recommended by knitting experts of the Lord Mayor of London’s Patriotic Fund. To Graft Toe: With front of sock facing you. pass needle through Ist stitch of front needle as if to purl, and leave on. 1. Pass needle through Ist stitch of back needle as if to purl, and take off, then through 2nd stitch of back needle as if to knit, and leave on. 2. Pass needle through Ist stitch of front needle as if to knit, and slip off, then through 2nd stitch of front needle and leave on. Repeat 1 and 2 till all stitches are woven off.
Darn in the end neatly, lengthwise. Press with a damp cloth.
