CARTERTON
PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNUAL MEETING POORLY ATTENDED. (“Times-Age" Special.) At the annual meeting of the Cartertori Public Library Mr W. Vaughan presided. There was a poor attendance of subscribers, and as a result no election took place. Routine business was transacted including the passing of accounts. In the course of his report the chairman stated: —It is gratifying to be able to report a considerable increase in membership since the last annual meeting. About 200 new books have been purchased and put into circulation during the year. It has been the aim of the committee to cater for all tastes and the range of books has been as diversified as possible. It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep up the supply owing to the shortage of books coming to New Zealand and the increase in price of printed matter. The reading room has been kept well up to standard and has served a useful purpose, being well patronised by the general public. You will see by the balance sheet that we have a credit balance of £7O Os Id at the bank comprised partly of the council grant for the coming year. The last consignment of books has not yet been paid for but there should be a substantial balance after accounts have been paid. I recommend that the incoming committee spent this on new books before the winter sets in or as new books become obtainable. MINIATURE RIFLES LAST NIGHT’S SCORES. Owing to other attractions there was not a very large attendance of shooters at the miniature rifles range last night. On Tuesday evening next a commencement will be made with the aggregate shooting and the competitions. The result of the shooting last night was as follow (the scores being off the rille):—W. Press, 100: R. Hawker, 98; R. Porter, 98; A. J. King, 98; H. Torrey, 97; Miss A. McPhee, 97; G. Goodin. 96; D. Gayfer, 96; Miss Freer, 96; C. J. DeLacey, 95; L. Tunnicliffe, 93; Miss J. Lorenzen, 92; A. Ordish, 91; K. Townsend, 90.
SCHOOL ASSOCIATION RE-FORMED IN CARTERTON.
A well attended and enthusiastic meeting of parents and friends was held in the Carterton School on Monday evening to reform the Home and School Association. A room had been very tastefully arranged and a very enjoyable time was spent. Mr W. Martin was elected to the chair and during the evening spoke of the aims and objects of Home and School Associations in general and the urgent requirements of the Carterton School, the most outstanding of which were research and class libraries, and apparatus for visual education.
During the evening songs were rendered by Mrs Nightingale, Miss Joyce Paterson, and Messrs Irwin and Kay. Mr Kay played his own accompaniments on the guitar, and Mr Martin played the piano accompaniments. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr Nicholls; secretary and treasurer, Mrs F. L. Barr; committee, Mesdames Gooding, Hurndell, Patterson, Steffert and King, and Messrs Beere and Martin, with an additional representative to be appointed by the School Committee.. The' next meeting is to be held on June 4. The annual subscription was fixed at one shilling. Supper was served at the close of proceedings. Personals. Before the business of the Borough Council was commenced last night the Mayor referred to the death of the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage. Members stood in silence for a few moments out of respect to the memory of deceased. The Clerk’s action in forwarding a telegram of sympathy to the Acting Prime Minister at the time of Mr Savage’s death was endorsed. Mr W. Ballinger, Holloway Street, has passed the medical examination for active service in the New Zealand military forces. Mr A. Ingley, manager of Carterton gasworks, is attending a gas managers’ conference in Wellington. Baby Carnival.
