SOME INTERESTING FACTS. Not only does a stream How much faster in the middle than at the sides, but it Hows much faster on the surface than at the bottom. This is due to friction with the soil or stones on the sides and the bottom of the stream: and this friction not only delays the water but wears away the sides and bottom. A famous geologist found that, water flowing at the rate of three inches a second would tear up fine clay: six. inches a second would dislodge tine sand; 12 inches a .second would move fine gravel: and three feel a second would carry off stones the] size of a Jen's egg.
