WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. ("Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Women': Institute was held recently and despite the bad weather there was a good attendance. Mrs. Spicer (president) presided. It was decided to send two delegates to the meeting of the Federation in Masterton on April 24. IVlesdames Spicer and Atkinson were appointed. Miss Cock gave an interesting talk on her experiences during her recent trip abroad, particularly in respect to the Panama Canal. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competition held during the afternoon was won by Mrs. P. Macdonald, senr. The competition for the best biscuit was won by Mrs. Marshall with MissHanlon second. Mrs. R. J. McClelland led the members in a community sing. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Carter, Gray and Atkinson. The Institute will hold a function in the Memorial Hall on Saturday for the purpose of raising funds for patriotic purposes.

PIRINOA SCHOOL I FINAL MEETING OF OLD COMMITTEE. The final meeting of the School Committee was held on Monday evening. Mr. Duggan, in the absence of the chairman, presided. Correspondence was received from the Department returning the book: duly audited and congratulating the secretary on the manner in which the books were kept. Accounts totalling £lO were passed for payment. The financial statement ending at the audit, showed the Special Account tc stand at £22 4s. 6d. and the General Account at £2B 5s 3d. The secretary read a statement in connection with the picnic which showed that the gathering had proved a decided success. There was a pool - attendance at the annual meeting of householders on Monday evening. The outgoing committee was re-elected: Messi's. S. McIntosh (chairman). Sutton (secretary) Carter, Duggan and Riwai. GOLF CLUB HUME MEMORIAL CUP. There was a surprisingly good attendance of local golf members on Saturday, when the first round of the William Hume Memorial Cup was played. Incidentally the standard of golf was higher than usual. No doubt this was due to the improvements to the greens as the result of the recent rain. M. McLeod returned the best nett score of 68. This player has struck form early. On several occasions last year he produced really first class golf. Mart Flume, who will shortly enter the Air Force, also showed excellent form, and it is unfortunate that his services to the club will be of short duration. Mr. Gilbert Munro, who has been ar employee of the McDougall Estate foi some years, will sever his connection at the end of the month. Mr. Munrc has enlisted for active service. Messrs. Watty Charteris, manager of Whalarangi Station, and Neil and NoelJlumc have also enlisted and have been passed as medically fit. The latter is to join the Air Force. $ Mr. and Mrs. Osborne, who were on a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Duggan, have left for their home in Christchurch. _ Mr\and Mrs. and Miss J. Hutchison, are visiting Wellington. '■ '' Mr. and Mrs. S. Hall, Kumenga, arc visiting Wellington for a few days. Miss'Betty Davenport, Masterton, is the guest Of Mrs. Hall. Miss Eileen Hall, who is to be married shortly, is at present slaying with her parents. Miss Thompson, Gisborne, is staying wilh her sisters at Turanganui. It is understood that Mr. Walter Higgison, who has been operating the. Featherston-Whangaimoana-Lake Ferry mail service for the past fourteen years will shortly relinquish his contract owing to failing health. During his term, Mi'. Higgison has made himself exceedingly popular, being both courteous and obliging and his impending retirement will be keenly felt by the residents of the Lower Valley. Mrs. P. Smith and Mrs. and Miss Weethead, who were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith at the weekend. have left on their return to Auckland. Mr. Russell Hall, of the Prisons Department, is spending a short holiday with his parents at Kumenga. The wedding was celebrated at Greytown on Friday of Lena, youngest daughter of Mi', and the late Mrs. laurau Kohunui and Mr. Peter Piwari Greytown. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. 11. Manihera. Mr. J. Cowan, who has been in Funding for the past four months, has returned home,
