DRIVE ON TRONDHEIM
INITIAL ALLIED SUCCESSES. GERMAN COUNTERSTROKE REPELLED. LONDON, April 23. In the action against the Germans at Stiklestad a threat to the British rear was staved off when British units lining the road from Stenkjaer drove back troops landed from German destroyers in the north part of Trondheim Fiord. French and British troops, believed to have landed at Namsos, are thrusting south toward Trondheim in cooperation - with Norwegian forces. They are stated to have gained control of the railway communication down to the head of Trondheim Fiord despite German aerial bombing and machine-gunning, and they now appear to have had a direct major collision with German outposts defences off Trondheim. BRITISH SUBMARINES SAFE RETURN TO BASE. BIG BAG OF ENEMY SHIPS. (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, April 23. The submarines H.M.S. Sea Lion, Snapper and Sunfish have returned to their base, after sinking 35,000 to 40,00G tons of enemy shipping, including transports. SHARP ENGAGEMENT REPORTED BY WAR OFFICE. IN AREA NORTH OF TRONDHEIM. (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) ' LONDON, April 23. The War Office has announced that operations in Norway are proceeding in co-operation with the Norwegian forces. In the. south our troops in conjunction with the Norwegians are resisting enemy pressure. Our troops north from Trondheim have been counter-attacked and a sharp engagement ensued. MORE AIR ATTACKS FALSE CLAIM BY GERMANS. (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) LONDON. April 23 v An Air Ministry communique states that the R.A.F. carried out further attacks on enemy air bases in Denmark and Norway last night. They bombed the Kjeller and Fornebu aerodromes, near Oslo. Incendiary bombs were seen to start a large fire at Fornebu. The Aalborg aerodrome also was further attacked. The Germans claim to have shot down four British aircraft, is false. One British aircraft only failed to return. EVENTS IN PROSPECT WAR MAY SPREAD SOON "Vo SWEDEN. PREDICTION BY FRENCH SPOKESMAN. (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) PARIS. April 23. A War Ministry spokesman expressed the opinion that the war may soon spread to Sweden, “where important events appear imminent.”
