Donation to Patriotic Fund.

A donation of £7O, proceeds of a dance on April 19, organised at “Rathkeale" by Mrs H. B. Maunsell and a committee, has been made to the Fighting Services Welfare Appeal. The amount, which is exclusively for overseas use, is acknowledged by Mr. D. McKee Wright. General Secretary ol the Masterton Y.M.C.A. Local Body Anamoly. "All other local bodies, with the sole exception of borough councils, arc faced with the same predicament," stated Mr J. F. Thompson at a meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board this morning, when referring to the position which had arisen owing to the illness of the chairman, Mr H. H. Mawley. Il had been pointed out by the acting-chairman of the meeting. Mi Trevor Beetham, that the board was without a chairman in the interim period of meetings, as the board had only power to appoint a deputy-chair-man to preside over the actual bnarc meetings. It was pointed out that steps were being taken to remove the anamoly. Mouth of Wairoa River. In April of last year a flood altered the mouth of the Wairoa River, and during its wanderings in the course ol the next 12 months the river caused considerable damage to land and property. The access road to the beach was washed away and the settlers al the heads isolated. Because of the shallowness of the bar it was impossible for boats to enter the river, and no shipping has worked the port since last April. Finally, the Wairoa Borough Council, the county council, and the Wairoa Harbour Board, approached the Government with a request that the Public Works Department make an attempt to open the river. Their representations were successful, and last week a start was made to open the mouth al the former entrance between the piers. Excellent progress was being made but last Friday night the river, swollen by up-country rains, burst through the shingle spit, at Signal Hill' and established a direct cut through to the sea. Unless very heavy seas block this new outlet, it seems certain that the attempt to make an opening between the piers will be most difficult
