SUCCESS OF HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION LOAN OF £lOO TO GOVERNMENT. REVIEW P,Y THE CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEE.There was a good attendance of householders at the Maslcrton Central School last night. Mr. W. R. Nicol was elected to the chair. Apologies for absence wore received from Messrs. J. E. MeV. Calweli and G. Beecroft. Prior to the commencement of business, the chairman referred to the death of Mr. Savage and moved that a letter of sympathy be sent to the Government. Those present stood for a few moments in silence as a mark of respect. In commenting on the annual report (as published in the "Times-Age’’) and the balance sheet. Mr. Nicol stated that the committee had every reason to be very proud of the results achieved. He stated that as parents they should all take an active part in encouraging their children to be proud of their school. "Wo have a school staff second to none in the Wairarapa, and a wonderful lot of parents," added Mr. Nicol. Referring to the active part played by the Home and School Association, which he founded four years ago. Mi’. Nicol stated that it had proved itself both financially and socially a wonderful success. In commenting on the loan of £lOO made to the Government for the duration of the war and six months after, Mr. Nicol considered that they were very lucky to be under such circumstances. He did not know of any other such loan being made in the Wellington Education Board's district. The returning officer. Mr. A. W. G. Rollings, announced the result of the election as follows, those elected being: Messrs A. V. Dixon, W. R. Nicol, A. I. Gibbs, C. J. Braggins, J. H. F. Colo. P. H. Shaw. W. L. Butler. J. E. MeV. Calweli. There wore ton nominations. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr. E. G. Coddington. headmaster: to Mr. ,J. Fenton, caretaker; to the Trust Lands Trust and to the Press. Mr. Nicol referred to the faithful service given by Mr. Hollings over the past 25 years in the capacity of secretary. The meeting concluded with a hearty vote of thanks passed to the chairman for his capable service. At a subsequent meeting of (lie now committee Mr Calweli was appointed chairman (Mr W. R. Nicol withdrawing his nomination in favour of Mr Calweli), and Mr Nicol vice-chairman. The necessary sub-committees were appointed.
LANSDOWNE IMPROVEMENTS TO GROUNDS. NOTABLE SCHOOL SUCCESSES. Mr. H. E. Pither presided over an attendance of 26 householders at the biennial meeting for the election of a School Committee in the Lansdowne School last night. The election resulted: Chairman. Mr. J. G. McFarlane; secretary, Mr. C. H. Jarvis; treasurer, Mr. J. McGregor; Messrs. A. V. Faulknor; J. R. Donovan. J. G. Dagg. R ,E. Baker. C. K. Long and J. G. Mac Kay. There wore fifteen nominations. "We have in Lansdowne one of the most beautifully situated schools in the Wellington district." said the retiring chairman. Mr. H. E. Pither. "It has been my committee's aim to improve the grounds as much as possible and we appreciate very much the gift of English trees by Mr. P. J. Borthwick. Those flowering' cherries, which will bo a fine asset to the school, have been planted along the boundary facing the hospital. The reports of the inspec-. tors are very gratifying and the committee is proud of the work of Mr. Jones and his stall. > "The school must be congratulated on the splendid results achieved in the 'Learn to Swim' campaign ’’ Mr. Pither said. "Two pupils won bronze medallions in life-saving, and 7-1 certificates for swimming. Lansdowne took a prominent • part in the combined schools' handwork' display held in Masterton last year and 43 exhibits were selected for the Centennial Exhibition." Mr. Pither said the school had been successful in sport, and he went on to thank the ladies' committee lor their lino work in the interests of the children. In commenting on the report, the Rev. David McNeur made appreciative reference to the work of the teacher in charge of the work at the hospital. Miss Allan. The chairman stressed the overcrowding problem which was being ex-1 pcrieneed al. the school and oll'orod the suggestion to the incoming committeethat they do all in their power to have an additional room added on to the main school. Mr. Donovan moved a hearty vote of thanks to the ladies of the Home and School Association for their splendid work. A vote of thanks was also accorded the chairman. Mr. Pither, lor his services over the past six years, regret being expressed that Mr. Pither had decided not to stand for re-election. The headmaster. Mr. J. W. T.
