Opening a conference of petrol and motoring interests to consider the best method of restricting petrol consumption as a means of conserving dollar exchange, the Prime Minister (Mr R. G. Me'nzies) suggested that Australia might have to cut its petrol purchases at least 50 per cent. He pointed out that on the basis of the present transactions with nonsterling countries Australia’s adversebalance of £23,000.000 in the present fiscal year would bo increased to over £27,000,000 in 1940-41.
