BRITISH STEAMERS SUNK. SURVIVORS LANDED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON, April 20. The British steamer Hawnby . (5404 tons) sank after an explosion off the south-east coast. Naval pinnaces picked up the crew of 39. The Mersey (1037 tons) also sank off the south-east coast. Seven of her crew were taken to hospital and one died. An eyewitness described a terrific explosion before the ship disappeared. A British Official Wireless report says that 38 officers and men of the British steamer Swainby arrived at a northern port yesterday. The U-boat which attacked the steamer was never seen by the men of the Swainby, which sank in eight minutes. The master of the vessel was in a ship torpedoed a couple of months ago. and one of her firemen was a prisoner on the Admiral Graf Spec. NEW MINE CAMPAIGN? LONDON, April 21. Germany appears to have renewed minelaying by air off the south-east coast, which probably caused the loss of the Hawnby and Mersey. Two of the Mersey’s crew are dead and 11 are missing, including the captain. The Mersey sank in three minutes.
