MASTERTON CLUB

SEASON OPENED ON SATURDAY.

THREE-MILE TRAINING RUN.

The official opening of the Masterton Harrier Club took place at the Park Oval on Saturday afternoon. There was a field of about 30 runners, including a large contingent from the Kiaterc Club who were present as guests, to take part in the three-mile training rim. The race was taken in easy stages under the leadership of R. N. Shaw and Wrn. McDonald.

Harriot's, officials and supporters of both local harrier clubs later adjourned to the Social Hall, where afternoon tea was served by the ladies' committee. Those present stood in silence for a few moments in memory of the late Mr. T. Wyeth, who was a staunch supporter of the club. Mr. I. D. Cameron, in declaring the season open, stated that it was pleasing to note that one-fifth of the members had answered the call for service overseas, He hoped that there would bo more co-operation between the two local harrier clubs and that a successful year would be experienced.

Mr. G. R. Sykes urged members to keep up their spirits. He was sure that the Allies would win the war.

The club captain. Mr. R. N. Shaw spoke of the prospects of the club this season and said that although some ol the best runners had enlisted, the season promised well. On behalf of the Kiatere Club, the president. Mr. Askew, and club caplain, Mr. MacDonald, thanked the Masterton Club for inviting them to bo present. They hoped to be able to return the compliment in the following! week. Three cheoros wore given for 1 the Ladies' Committee.

Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. J. Robertson. M.P.. W. A. Todd and S. V. Gooding (vicepresidents).
