WAR RAFFLES
IN AH) OF PATRIOTIC FUNDS PROVISIONS OF GAMING ACT RELAXED. MINISTER’S ANNOUNCEMENT. CHRISTCHURCH. April 19 An announcement was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hen W. E. Parry) today that an Order-in-Council had been prepared for approval by Cabinet extending the provisions of the Gaming Act to permit the conduct of raffles for real or personal property. The extension is being made for the duration of the war and covers raffles designed to assist patriotic purposes. At present the Gaming Act limits the conduct of raffles to art prizes and the extension now proposed will have lhe effect of considerably increasing the scope under which these competitions are held. The Minister’s announcement was made in reply to a deputation from the Canterbury Patriotic Council, pointing out that a furnished house had. been offered as a raffle prize for patriotic funds in Christchurch.
