Henry Ballatine Best was committed for trial at Manchester on a charge of attempting to murder Judge Burgis. He pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence. The prosecution read a statement in which Best allegedly said he felt the dismissal of his case at the tribunal to be grossly unfair and he developed a fierce hatred for the judge. “Just as the judge was about to enter a railwaj' carriage,” he added. “I was suddenly filled with savage rage and knifed him.” Judge Burgis. chairman of the. Lancashire and Cheshire Conscientious Objectors Tribunal, was stabbed four times in the back when boarding a train, and was admitted to the Manchester Hospital with severe wounds. His condition was reported to be serious. Henry Ballantine Best, a clerk, aged 24. was charged at Manchester with intent to murder Judge Burgis.
