SAVAGE ATTACK
ON CHAIRMAN OF OBJECTORS’ TRIBUNAL MANCHESTER CLERK PLEADS NOT GUILTY. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON. April 18. Henry Ballatine Best was committed for trial at Manchester on a charge of attempting to murder Judge Burgis. He pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence. The prosecution read a statement in which Best allegedly said he felt the dismissal of his case at the tribunal to be grossly unfair and he developed a fierce hatred for the judge. “Just as the judge was about to enter a railwaj' carriage,” he added. “I was suddenly filled with savage rage and knifed him.” Judge Burgis. chairman of the. Lancashire and Cheshire Conscientious Objectors Tribunal, was stabbed four times in the back when boarding a train, and was admitted to the Manchester Hospital with severe wounds. His condition was reported to be serious. Henry Ballantine Best, a clerk, aged 24. was charged at Manchester with intent to murder Judge Burgis.
