MAN WHO RECEIVES £117.000. At the top of the list of highest salaries paid in the United States for the year 1938. which' the Treasury has just 'published, is Mr. F. A. Courtway. president of Lever Bros., an American subsidiary of the British firm of the same name who received £117.000. The year's report lakes no account of income from investments or other sources and the names o! such men as Mr Henry Ford and Mr John Rockefeller do not appear. Second on the list is Mr. Thomas Watson, of the International Business Machines Corporation, with £.113,000. while Claudette Colbert the film actress. is sixth with £75.000. according to the "Daily Telegraph's" Now York correspondent. Other large salaries quoted wore: Mr. Eugene Grace, president of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. £91.000: Mr. George Hill, president of the American Tobacco Company, £B2 000: Mr. Owen Young, chairman (now retired) of the General Electric Corporation. £61.000; Sir Douglas Alexander, president of the Singer Manufacturing Company £50.000; Mi-. Walter Chrysler, chairman of the Chrysler Corporation. £4OOOO and Mi'. Edsol Ford, president ~f the Fold Motor Company £2B 000
