The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, AttorneyGeneral, will leave Wellington tonight for the South Island. Tre Hon. P. Fraser. Prime Minister, will leave Wellington tonight to attend the centennial celebrations in Akaroa tomorrow. He will return to Wellington on Sunday. The Most Rev. T. O’Shea. Roman Catholic Archbishop of Wellington and Metropolitan of New Zealand, travelled South from Wellington last night to attend the Akaroa centennial celebrations. The death at the age of 66 of Mr Robert Hale, one of the most versatile personalities on the English stage, is reported in a cablegram from London. He was the father of Sonnie and Binnie Hale. The funeral of the late Mrs J, Jones took place yesterday afternoon, the service at the Chapel and that at the Masterton Cemetery being conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich. The pall-bearers were Messrs R. Irons, P. C„ W. J. and A. Y. Taplin. The Hon. W. E. Parry. Minister of Internal Affairs, left Wellington last night for the South Island. He will receive deputations in Christchurch today. and tomorrow he will attend the centennial celebrations in Akaroa. Mr Parry will return to Wellington on Sunday morning. A visitor at the Rotary Club’s luncheon at Masterton yesterday was Mr. D. E. Parton, many years ago secretary of the Masterton Football and Cricket clubs, a Wairarapa representative cricketer and one of the best all-round players Wairarapa has seen, being an outstanding batsman and bowler. Another visitor. Mr. George Wilson, was in his younger days a brilliant footballer and cricketer, being associated with Otago University teams and later playing for Wairarapa. Government approval of the award of nine scholarships to selected officers of the New Zealand Public Service, tenable at Victoria University College. Wellington, was announced yesterday. The scholars will take a special course in public administration for the Diploma in Public Administration. The nine candidates selected for the first scholarships are: —L. A. Atkinson. M.Com. (Customs Department): K. J. Scott. M.A.. LL.B. (Public Trust Office): C A. McFarlane. B.Com. (Post and Telegraph): T. P. Davin. LL.M. (Railways); K. G. Reid. LL.B. (Railways): T R. Smith. M.Com. (Industries and Commerce); K. A. Wills. 8.A.. B.Com. (Industries and Commerce); A. G. Rodda. A.I.A. (Land and Income Tax); M. J. Moriarty. A.I.A. (Customs). The death occurred on Tuesday in the Wellington Hospital of Mr. Victor Beck, a well-known figure in New Zealand. for half a century, having been cither advance agent or manager of various theatrical companies, concert parties and lecturers. Born in New York 75 years ago. Mr Beck camo to New Zealand first as advance manager for George Rignold’s "Lights o’ London" company in 1882. He was also concerned in the tour of New Zealand of the late Mr. Dion Boucicault, not the Dion Boucicault that the generation of today may remember well (in association with Mr. Robert Brough), but his father. Among the other componies Mr. Beck was associated with wore the Mohawk Minstrels. Bland Holt. Brough and Boucicault. and. in later years, the Red Dandies and the Smart Set entertainers. Mr. Beck had been confined to the hospital for the last nine months. He leaves a widow and one son. Mr. Victor Beck. Wellington.
