THE NUMBERING OF HOUSES.

that the Town Clerk lias been instructed to look into the matter of the numbering 1 of houses in Mastertori, it may be hoped that an end will be made speedily of a state of affairs by no means creditable to a modern and progressive town. At the meeting of the Borough Council the other evening, Councillor Cl. D. Wilson observed that the numbering of houses in Essex Street was in an appalling state. There are a good many other streets of which much the same might justly be said. Il was slated by the Mayor (Mr 'I 1 . Jordan) that some years ago the council had engaged a man Io do fin 1 job. Surely, however, it is Hie duty of the council riot only to engage someone to do the job, but to see to it that Ihe job is doin' and that an orderly numbering of buildings throughout the town is instituted and maintained. Whether if is necessary Io enforce a uniform system of marking may lie a mailer of opinion, but at least legible marking that will serve its useful intended purpose should bo insisted upon. Anyone who has ever attempted to locale a given house in an unfamiliar locality, particularly at night lime, will agree with the opinion expressed by Councillor 11. E. (lordlier that il is desirable that the house number should be placed on a gale post. In any case universal and plain marking ought to bo enforced without any further delay, ('tearing up (he existing confusion and obscurity of house numbering in parts of Masterton is a duty the Borough Comieil ought to have carried out long ago.
