SMALL ROCKERIES
SOME SUGGESTIONS. Most ameteurs arc aware that a rockery is not usually seen to full advantage unless constructed in a fairly large garden. But. where one is really desired lor the small garden the main things to bear in mind are to have plenty of soil, avoid climbers, and not to use bits of china or other such rubbish. A few good stones, propertly laid, with ample soil between, are sufficient. Naturally, plants cannot grow creditably where there is but a cupful of soil wherein to root. Rockeries under the drip of trees are invariably a failure even when planted with ferns, which do not like drips, although preferring moisture. Drips quickly destroy the beauty of fresh green fronds. Far better it is to plant border perennials which if a judicious selection is made, make a show of colour from spring until the autumn.
