CARTERTON

RED CROSS SOCIETY MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ("Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Carterton Red Cross Society’s committee was held in the Borough Council offices last night. There were present: Mesdames A. W. Beale. E. T. Beaven. P. A. Cole. R. N. Campbell. R. H. Every. L. J. Fairbrother, C. A. Chennells, H. Knutson. W. C. M. Sorensen and Miss Wolters, the treasurer (Mr Callender), the secretary (Miss C. Berrill) and the Mayor (Mr. D. L. Taverner). Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames N. Peacock and A. F. Stubbs and Dr. Campbell. A donation of £1 was received with thanks from Mrs. Bert Booth. Miss Wolters moved and Mrs Beaven seconded that the Women’s Institute and Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union be "thanked for their gift of knitted garments. It was decided to advertise for goods and garments needed so urgently for the relief of Finnish women and children. Arrangements are to be made for a depot in town where goods and garments may be left on certain days and where a sewing and sorting room will be available. The use of two sewing machines was offered by members of the committee.

A special general meeting of all members of the society is to be called for Monday. April 22, in the Dalefield Buildings, at 7.30 o'clock, to make arrangements for the Sick and Wounded. Corlet v. Miss Lamb and Miss Freer. HOCKEY HINEMOA CLUB. A meeting of the Hinemoa Hockey Club was held at Carterton on Monday evening. Mrs. E. W. Compton presided over a good attendance of members. The report and balance sheet, showing the club to be in a satisfactory financial position, were adopted. The election of officers resulted as under:—Patron. Mr. M. J. Parker; president. Mr. C. K. Goodin-, vice-presi-dent. Mr. H. E. Ward; club coaches, Messrs. Adams and Finn; trustees. Miss V. Ward and Mrs. E. Compton; delegates to Hockey Association, Mrs. E. Compton and Miss M. Parker; secretary, Miss M. Parker. j It was resolved to enter a senior and junior teams in the competition. ' It was decided to hold a combined dance with the Belvedere Basketball Club, on April 29. A practice will be held every Wednesday morning.

A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. E. Compton for placing her residence at the convenience of the club for meetings. S.M. COURT CARTERTON SITTING. The monthly sitting of the Carterton S.M. Court was held yesterday, before the Magistrate, Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., when a short list of debt cases were disposed of as under: — Feist & Co. v. B. Feast, claim £5, judgment by default with court costs. 10s. Several other cases were down for hearing but were held over sine die to be called on later. The Traffic Officer. Inspector C. S. Nicholson, proceeded against L. Meyers that on February 1 he did operate a motor vehicle it not being equipped with a foot brake according to the Traffic Regulation Act, 1936. Mr. Marsack appeared for defendant and pointed out that the proceedings, he thought, had been brought against the wrong person. Mr. Meyer only being a man-

ager and not an owner. A similar charge was laid against the Red Star Trading Co., Palmerston North, which had been using the vehicle and sent it on to Meyer for use as manager. The magistrate concurred with Mr. Marsack’s view and the charge against Meyer was withdrawn and the Red Star Trading Co. was convicted and fined £2 with costs 10s.

OBITUARY MR FRED YOULE. The'death occurred at Carterton last evening of Mr Fred Youlc, of Ahiaruhe Soldier Settlement. The late Mr Youle was well known throughout the Wairarapa. He was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs T. T. Youle, of ’Eketahuna. His health for some time bad not been good and as a result he entered hospital and despite careful nursing he died as a result of his illness. He went through the 1914-18 war, having been a member of the .Wellington Mounted Rifles. He saw service in Gallipoli and France. At the time of his death he was a member of the Carterton Branch of the R.S.A. and will be given a R.S.A. funeral. He is a member of the Masterton Odd Fellows' Lodge. He is survived by a wife and no family. Messrs T. J. Youle (Feilding) and C. C. Youlc (Ashhurst) are brothers. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving Broadway, Carterton, at 1.30 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.

LICENSING BENCH

TAUERU HOTEL REMODELLING. Two members of the Wairarapa Licensing Bench. Messrs. W. C. M. Sorensen and H. Rees, with the Chairman, Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., yesterday went into plans and specifications for the remodelling of the Taueru Hotel. After consideration, it was decided to approve of the alterations. Parkvaie Social Club. The Parkvale Social Club will hold a monster centennial dance and euchre in the Parkvale Hall on Monday evening next. Novelty dances and good prizes for cards are among the attractions. Music for the dancing will be provided by Ucly's Orchestra. Admission prices are advertised. W.D.F.U. The Carterton branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union is holding a birthday party in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Friday evening next, when it is anticipated a large attendance will be present. Personal. News was received yesterday from Brougham Street Hospital, Wellington that Mr. A. R. Clark, who met with an eye injury on Sunday, was improving. Building Society. At a meeting of shareholders of the Wairarapa Terminating Building Society held last evening. Mr L. H. Smart presiding, no tender was received for the appropriation of £6OO and a ballot was held, Mr A. W. Brentnall. Martinborough, securing £2OO and Mr Jas Steel. Carterton. £3OO, with the right oi a further £3OO when available. He exercised his right to forgo and a further ballot resulted in Mrs Harry Knutson securing £3OO immediately and £3OO when available.
