BALACLAVAS
. INSTRUCTIONS FOR KNITTING. Particulars for knitting a balaclava, designed in collaboration with the Admiralty and the Royal Air Force Comforts Committee, are supplied by the Wellington Navy League as follow: — Length, about 15 inches. Double knitting, navy blue. No. 9 needles. Using No. 9 needles, commence nt lower edge, casting on 122 stitches. First row: K. 2 (p. 2 k. 2) to end. Second row: P. 2 (k. 2 p 2) to end. Repeat these two rows till work measures 3 inches. Next 14 rows: Cast of! 2, k. in rib to end 194 sts.). K. in rib till work measures 1.3 inches from lower edge. Next 2 rows: Cast off 34, k. in rib to end (26 sis.). K. in rib on these 26 sts. for 7 inches. Leave these sts. on needle for the present. Sew up front seam, then sew each side of the 7 inch strip to the 34 cast-off sts., slightly stretching castoff edge.
Ribbing round front —Hold right side of work facing, commence at front scam. With No. 9 needle, pick up' 54 sts. round right, hand side of opening. Leave the 26 sts. already on needle; with another needle pick .up 56 sts. round left hand side of opening (136 sts. now on three needles). K. rounds in rib of k. 2. p. 2 for 3 inches. Cast off in rib fairly loosely.
