A New Zealander, who has just returned. from Australia, says that many racing men attended the’ Easter sales in Sydney in the belief that yearlings would sell fairly cheaply. Factors, leading them to this conclusion were the lower averages obtained at the New Zealand and the 'Victorian sales, the drought, the war. industrial trouble and the prospect of increased taxation. However, the sale was not long in progress before the idea was dispelled. and at the end of the three days of selling it was found that the average was higher than last year’s and that the aggregate (more than 100.000 guineas) was the greatest for 10 years or more. He said there were many beautiful yearlings paraded. He was much interested, of course, in the Beau Peres. These colts and fillies looked exceptionally good and captivated Australians, who competed spiritedly for them. The Bonita colt for which Mr. Alan Cooper paid 3509 guineas is a striking individual, and everyone hoped he would justify Mr. Coopers’ outlay. A colt which might be equally good is by Beau Pere from Grey Port. This yearling has gone into George Price’s stable. Some of the yearlings by Spearfelt. Piccadilly. Pantheon. Double Remove, Brueghel, and The Buzzard were very attractive. On the whole, however, he preferred the appearance of the yearlings to bo seen at the national sales at Trantham, and is confident New Zealand has no* equal in this part of the globe as a thoroughbred nursery.

A. Useful Pair. The Wellington owner. Mr. J. L. Cheesman, has only two horses carrying his colours. Alunga and Piastre, but he has won no fewer than five races with them inside a fortnight. Alunga was doubly successful at Wairarapa and then again at Manawatu. and Piastre was a winner at lengthy odds both at Wairarapa and at Manawatu. Piastre whose only other success has been a maiden event at Ashurst in January, first up for a season and a half, is now only one win from going out of hack class. He is an Australian bred four-year-old gelding by Salmagundi (now at Otautau) out of the Wallace Mortlake —Princess Love mare Love Lake, and he descends from the same family as Duke Foote. Ortello's Son, Adrian’s March, and Richmond Main, all excellent winners, Duke Foote’s successes including lhe A.J.C. Metropolitan and Richmond Main’s the two Derbies as well as second in the Melbourne Cup. He was bought by T. R. George on behalf of Mr. Cheesman as a yearling for 100 guineas. His name is a happy choice for a stayer as /ho is showing himself, for another j Piastre won the Melbourne Cup in 1912.

A Good Advertisement. A good-looking colt or filly that shows speed and ability to got amongst the money is always a good advertisement for a sire. The best, advertisement the writer of the sporting notes in the “Otago Daily Times" has yet seen for Solicitor-General is Nisi Prius, who finished third in the Novice Stakes run in soft going on the second day at Oamaru. Nisi Prius is small and mean in conformation, tucked in the flanks, mean in the quarters, and generally light in condition, and on appearance one of the last to support to win a race. Nevertheless, Nisi Prius finished third and outstayed several others. If he appealed on appearance instead of being rejected then he might have won by 100 yards and so enhanced the reputation of his sire. When a mere frame of horse can get amongst the money, then there seems to be groat possibilities in store for well-conditioned horses got by the same sire.
