BOROUGH FINANCES
VERY SATISFACTORY YEAR. HIGH COLLECTION OK RATES. A statement covering the financial position of the borough, presented at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council disclosed, in the words of the Mayor. Mr. T. Jordan, a very satisfactory year. The statement read (figures for 193839 in parentheses):— Rates.—Total rates levied for year. £38.005 (£37,377); total rates collected for year. £35,316 (£34,473); percentage of rates collected. 97.4 (96.3). Particulars of Rates Collected. —Consolidated rates (including arrears): General rate, £14,238 (£14,379); separate, Library, £614 (£762): special rates for loan, interest and sinking fund. £11.146 (£9049): total consolidated rates collected, £26.034 (£26.434). Separate rates (including arrears): Water rate. £3720 (£3021): street lightingrate £1466 (£1360); hospital rate. £3579 (£3178). Special rates: For loan, interest and sinking fund. £1423 (£1260); total rates collected. £35,316 (£34.473): plus arrears. £906 (£780); total. £36,222 (£35.253); discount allowed off rates, £1573 (£1491); rates written off, £l3l (£44); rates outstanding. £985 (£1370). The balance in the District Fund Account as al March 31. 1940, was £1443. as compared with £2507 the previous year: Loan Account. £1261 (£389) and Cemetery Account. £lO (debit £33).
