GUY FAWKE’S CASE
HUSBAND SET ALIGHT. "This is a Guy Fawke's case,” said Mr J. M. Burger, the prosecutor, at Cape Town, when Jane Wold (28) appeared before Mr H. L. Corder for assaulting her husband, Cecil Wold,, by throwing methylated spirits over him and then setting him alight. She was fined £5 (or one month) suspended for six months subject to good behaviour. Wold said that she was annoyed at her husband's staying out late. “What do you plead to pouring the spirits over your husband and setting him alight?” asked Mr Burger. “I did it,” said the wife. “I was tired of his always being out at night. There are three children to be looked after.”
Her husband, who was holding a baby in court, pulled oft' his shirt and showed the magistrate his burns. -You cannot behave like this,” said Mr Corder. "1 lost my head. I promise not- to c’o it again," she replied. “When I saw the" flames, I poured water over him." . Her husband asked the magistrate to give her a warning and not to send her to gaol.
