REPORTS TO COUNCIL MEETING PARK AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. NEW LIBRARY SUBSCRIBERS. At the monthly meeting of the Mas- * terton Borough Council held last ■ night reports covering borough work for the month of March were submit- ; ted as follows: — Park Custodian. The acting Park Custodian. Mr F. H. Knowles, submitted his report covering the work carried out in the Park as follows: —“The general work of the Park has been carried out satisfactorily during the previous month. The seeds for spring display of flowers have been sown and seedlings pricked cfl' ready for bedding out. The cyclamens have been potted up and are now ready to oe transferred to the Begonia house. The work for this month will be the top dressing of the playing areas, the digging and manuring of all flower beds, the bedding out of the spring flowering plants and bulbs, the shifting of the Begonias to the cool house for drying off and replacing the same with cyclamen for a spring dis-
play. The paths and flower beds were hoed and tidied up and grass edges trimmed at Mawley Park during the past month. The sum of £1 7s 6d was collected as donations towards the Begonia house.” Municipal Band. The secretary of the band committee, Mr B. Rickards, reported that six band practices were held during the month. The band assisted at the Thanksgiving Service on March 10, the local Centennial Celebrations on March 14, the recruiting rally on March 15 and the farewell given to members of the Second Echelon on March 20. Cemetery. There were nine burials during the past month, stated the sexton, Mr C. S. Morris. Maintenance work had been carried out as usual. Mawley Camp. Mr T. Bullock, custodian, of Mawley motor camp reported that for the period December 1, 1939 to March 31. 1940, a total of ,327 motor cars had camped at the reserve. Fees collected 1 totalled £53 19s lid.
Ladies’ Rest Room. During the past month 324 visitors, 292 country people, and 52 townspeople had used the Ladies’ Rest Room, stated the custodian. The committee room had been used on two occasions. Librarian’s Report. The librarian's report showed that during the past month 5176 fiction and 611 reference books were issued from the borough library. During the month 66 fiction and 8 reference books were added to the library. Subscribers at the beginning of March totalled 515, 20 new subscribers having joined, and 2 left during the month, making the total subscribers to date 533. Abattoirs. The report of the abattoir manager slated that 394 cattle, 185 calves, 1.670 sheep, 338 lambs and 333 pigs were slaughtered during the past month. Of these 7 animals were condemned. The killing fees were £248 in excess Of those for Hie corresponding period last year. Gas Manager. The Gas Manager, Mr J. Y. Douglas, in the course of his report stated’ —Gas manufactured: Total gas made corrected N.T.P. was 3,690,300 cubic feet. The Government inspector visited the works on Thursday, March 7. The calorific value of the gas was 451 B.T.U. which conformed to Government regulations. Inspector of machinery: During the month the inspector examined the boiler and machinery and with the exception of a few minor alterations found everything to his complete satisfaction. Retort house roof:On the afternoon of Thursday, March 21, a heavy gale carried away a part of the ventilating system on the retort house roof. It is my intention to shorten the height of the ventilators and a carpenter has been engaged to carry out the work. Works holder: I Men are engaged at the present time in painting the crown of the holdei and patching some of the seams. General: The works arc running very satisfactorily at the present time.
